One of the things that defines Twitter may be coming to an end. The social media giant is reportedly musing increasing the character limit from 140 to 280 for all users.

In September, Twitter expanded the character limit for a select amount of users, testing the new feature. It appears that experiment was a success. According to Politico, Twitter may up the limits "in the very near future."

The decision to expand the amount of characters in a tweet is meant to help users communicate better over cultural and language barriers. In Twitter's blog post about the test increase back in January, the company explained:

We want every person around the world to easily express themselves on Twitter, so we're doing something new: we're going to try out a longer limit, 280 characters, in languages impacted by cramming (which is all except Japanese, Chinese, and Korean).

Some users didn't like the idea of Twitter increasing the character limits, saying the expanded messages would ruin what had made the social media site so great. For now, we'll have to see how everyone likes their supersized tweets when, and if the company makes the switch.
