San Diego Churchgoers Tackle Woman Armed With Handgun

Police in San Diego say a woman who was holding a 10-month-old baby and armed with a handgun had to be tackled by several churchgoers at a San Diego Easter service after she threatened to blow up the church Sunday.

Multiple 911 calls were made about the woman who entered the nondenominational church, TsidKenu, just after noon on Sunday. The woman, identified as Anna Conkey, 32, appeared to be delusional, the San Diego Police Department said in a statement.

"The female walked up on stage and made threats that she was going to blow up the church while waving the handgun," SDPD officials said in a news release. Witnesses say the woman came up on stage after using a back entrance. She was holding a gun in one hand and the 10-month-old in the other. She began shouting about "martyrs," "the rapture" and blowing up the church.

The woman was eventually tackled by several other churchgoers at the event on the property of Mt. Everest Academy.

Eyewitnesses told 10 News that the woman was ranting and saying "craziness about the rapture not being real and everyone going to hell."

An unloaded gun was recovered at the scene. A bomb unit searched the area, but did not find any explosives.

Deputies took the baby from the woman and dispatched Child Welfare Services to another, undisclosed location, where Conkey's 5-year-old daughter was located. Both children appeared to be healthy and unhurt.

No one was injured in the incident, police said.

Conkey was booked into jail on suspicion of making criminal threats and displaying a handgun in a threatening manner.

The incident occurred on the same day a coordinated bombing campaign in Sri Lanka left more than 200 people dead and hundreds more injured. SDPD chief David Nisleit said the bombings in Sri Lanka prompted their department to step up patrols on Sunday out of "an abundance of caution."
