Mickey Guyton’s is giving fans a “behind the scenes” look at how she recorded her new album during a pandemic — and eight months pregnant.
The “Better Than You Left Me” singer is debuting Remember Her Name on September 24, and with the release date around the corner, Guyton took to her social media channels with a “sneak peek” video. Guyton revealed her “little DIY setup” from her room, where she worked with producer Karen Kosowski via Zoom in lieu of being in the studio together. Guyton dubbed her makeshift studio “the little engine that could.” She went on to explain why she had to sing on an empty stomach while she worked on Remember Her Name:
“One of my favorite memories recording this album was when I recorded ‘American.’ I was about eight months pregnant and literally I couldn’t hit any of the notes if I had just eaten because there was no room in my stomach for my diaphragm to go anywhere, so I couldn’t hit the notes. So, I would literally have to make sure I had an empty stomach to sing the song. So, there you have it!”
When she announced her new album, Guyton promised music “that would make people feel self-empowered, loved, and comfortable with being themselves and this album holds true to all of that. I hope everyone who listens finds something that connects and speaks to them.” She added in a press release that the upcoming LP is “a culmination” of the past decade of her life in Nashville, bringing an end to that chapter of her life and embarking on a new one.
