Aug.18th is National Soft Serve Ice Cream Day.

J. F. McCullough, the father of Dairy Queen, is credited with inventing soft serve in 1938.  He reasoned that ice cream would taste better if it wasn't so cold that it numbed the taste buds.

He came up with a recipe and held a one day sale at a friend's restaurant advertising "All the Soft Ice Cream You Can Eat for Only 10 Cents!"  It was a huge hit with the public. Hedished out 1,600 servings in a single day.

In 1940 he opened a new ice cream store in Joliet, Illinois. He called his shop "Dairy Queen" and made soft serve his signature dish.
